Frogs Froggy
Will my widowed frog find a new mate?
I've got a pond with a family of frogs in it and some tadpoles but I noticed this morning that there's a dead squashed frog outside my house and I'm worried its one of mine. Do frogs mate for life or will my widow get a new partner? Will she leave or will another come? I need an expert on froggy bereavement. I'm gutted!
Common frogs and toads do not mate for life. One male will stake out a territory in a pond and mate the females in that territory until he is defeated by a rival male. They do not copulate like we do, the male climbs on the females back and as the female lays her eggs, the male will fertilize the eggs externally. Then he leaves her for another female. Hope this make you feel better. Good Luck!
