"Your Baby Can Read" Does It Really Work?

I saw an infomercial on TV about a program called "Your Baby Can Read". It is a phonics program with lessons for the television, pre-printed word flash cards, dry-erase word cards, and I think there was more.

My children love to have stories read to them and it is great mommy and me time. My kids are 3 and 2. I am just not sure if the program really works and if my children would enjoy it.

If anyone has used it, please let me know what your personal experiences are. Thank you for you feedback!

Until 7 years old, children don't have the tracking coordination to really read. I know that the experts at my local university (who were last I checked doing special reading innovations and such) told me that until 7-8 years old there was no way to know how well a child could read or couldn't read, and that until then to just teach sight words (words they recognize by shape more than actual letters) and just read to them.

I know that several studies have been done on early readers and how kids who start reading early do WONDERFULLY in Kindergarten... and then level off by about 3rd grade. There's several arguments why (the school system stinks, or developmental or something...) but it really doesn't support pushing children to read too soon above just loving to read.

The "Baby Can Read" people seem to be teaching mostly sight words. I don't think it could hurt your child (though I could be wrong because of the eye developmental things), but I don't see a purpose in it. What kids need most is that mommy and daddy time encouraging them to read, to love stories, and to love learning.

I found this link for you about complaints about them. Note the defenses page says that this program is to be started at about 3 months old, and 3 years is too old for the program.
